14年ぶりの入学式

ひさしぶりに入学式というものに出席しました。1995年以来だから、なんと14年ぶりです（年とったな～）。今年はINSEAD50周年の節目の年ということでして、新入生も過去最高の498人（フォンテンブロー314人、シンガポール184人）とのことです。平均年齢は例年通り29歳、女性は31％という統計みたいです。今までのMBA卒業生はざっと18200人ということで、かなり大きなalumni associationですね。

MBA DeanのJake Cohen、INSEAD DeanのFrank Brown、そして北アメリカLouis Vuittonの社長さんで卒業生のDaniel Lalondeさんらが挨拶をしてくれました。Jakeのスピーチは原稿があり、決まり文句を並べていたようです。他の二人はジョークを交えながらほとんどアドリブでした。

中でも私を含め、多くの新入生が感銘を受けたのが下記です。Lalondeさんが最後にわれわれに伝えた言葉で、1910年4月23日、26代目アメリカ大統領のTheodore Rooseveltがパリのソルボンヌ大学で行った講演の中の"Man in the Arena"という名前で知られる抜粋でした。

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.
